Alarm Room Operator
You will receive and process fire alarms and emergency calls, operate the telephone switchboard, dispatch equipment using manual or computer-aided dispatching systems, maintain radio contact with all vehicles attending emergencies, and provide logistical support to the Incident Commander at emergency scenes. Highly organized and quality focused, you will perform system tests, monitor routine and prescribed maintenance, and process administrative requirements as needed. Team oriented, you will also participate in the training of departmental staff and update directories, maps, and response and property information files. You have completed secondary or technical school and ideally courses in emergency service communications and computers. You have solid keyboarding abilities (with a minimum keyboarding speed of 40 wpm) and demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development. Able to react quickly and maintain calm under pressure, you have working knowledge of enhanced 9-1-1 emergency telephone and dispatch systems and excellent communication/language skills and public relations abilities. You must be able to work shifts and statutory holidays and emergency service experience is preferred. Testing will be required as part of the recruitment process. Salary range: $44,192 – $65,885 (2010 rates)
